As children around the country head back to school this fall, it’s important to keep in mind the fact that one everyday accessory can have long-lasting side effects, if not worn properly. Young people today are experiencing more back pain than any previous generation due to backpacks. Often, students don’t wear backpacks properly, and weight in the backpacks is distributed unevenly. Studies have shown that the longer a child wears a backpack, the longer it takes for a curvature in the spine to correct itself. The American Chiropractic Association suggests the following tips for preventing pain from backpack misuse:
- Make sure the backpack does not hang more than four inches below the waistline.
- Use both shoulder straps rather than slinging the backpack over one shoulder.
- Rely on wide, padded straps for comfort.
- Get a backpack with individualized compartments. This can help distribute the contents and weight more evenly.
- Determine the weight of the backpack and make sure it is no more than 10 percent of your child’s body weight when packed.
