9--Learning-About-Scoliosis

You may remember being in school and having to undergo scoliosis screenings. In that case, if you had or have scoliosis, you may have discovered it at a young age.

However, scoliosis, or, the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, can also come about later in life.

Causes of scoliosis include:

  • Congenital genetic predisposition: caused by a bone abnormality present at birth
  • Habitual behavioral routines
  • Degenerative: may result from traumatic injury, illness, neuromuscular conditions or osteoporosis
  • Idiopathic: there is no identifiable cause

From the rear view, the spine should appear straight with no sideways curvature.

Early detection of scoliosis is key no matter what the cause. Many children who have scoliosis do not require treatment because the spine corrects itself as the child grows and develops. However, depending on the degree of curvature and the age of the child, physical therapy may be recommended.

If untreated, scoliosis can often worsen and may lead to bracing or even surgery that forces the spine to straighten.

In the world of chiropractic, a schedule of adjustments can help scoliosis by improving the spine’s structure. This will help retrain and strengthen muscles, leading to improved posture. Adjustments may be enough to help your child avoid surgery or braces.
