9--Neck-Pain-and-Chiropractic-Care

The seven small vertebrae in your neck collectively hold up your head, which averages about 12 pounds.

Because the neck is so flexible to allow your head to move in nearly every direction, this ultimately makes it more vulnerable to injury.

Typical causes of neck pain include:

  • Sudden forced movement of the head or neck in any direction, such as whiplash
  • Degenerative disorders such as osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease
  • Daily habits, including poor posture, obesity, weak abdominal muscles, lack of exercise and stress

How can a chiropractor help your neck pain?

A chiropractor will first attempt to locate the source of the pain and will ask questions about when the pain started, any treatments you may have already tried, if anything lessens the pain or makes it worse and other pertinent information.

During a physical exam, your doctor will check your posture and range of motion, making note of any movement that causes pain.

Our chiropractor also may perform a neurological exam, during which he or she will test your reflexes, muscle strength and other nerve changes.

Depending on your condition, you may need an adjustment to improve your spine’s mobility. The chiropractor will use his or her hand to make an adjustment to the joints of the neck.

Because chiropractic care does not involve the use of drugs or surgery, if your condition requires treatment beyond the chiropractic scope, our Doctors of Chiropractic will refer you to the appropriate medical physician or specialist.
