While the majority of people get sufficient amounts of B-12 through their diets, others may have health conditions that leave them deficient of the vitamin. A frequently-cited study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that nearly 40 percent of the American population has B-12 levels that fall at or below the lowest qualifying amount to be considered normal.

Vitamin B-12 helps your body use fat and carbohydrates for energy and to make new protein. It is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy, and it helps create DNA.

Health conditions that can affect the presence of B-12 in one’s body include poor nutrition, stomach/intestinal problems, infection and cancer. Or, a deficiency may be just a result of a person’s diet lacking the vitamin.

A B-12 deficiency can lead to anemia, stomach problems and nerve damage. Other symptoms include muscle weakness, tingling extremities, lack of energy, mental fogginess and back pain.

For this reason, many people add B-12 to their diets, some use dissolving tablets, supplements or injections. All can be beneficial to people in need of boosting their B-12 levels.  Increased B-12 can help with depression and mood disorders, fatigue, memory failure and low blood pressure, among others.
