You’ve probably experienced pain before and been told, “It’s probably just a pinched nerve.”
But what exactly is a pinched nerve?
A pinched nerve is a common name for nerve irritation or nerve disturbances.
Broken down further, there are 24 moving bones in your spine that protect your spinal cord while allowing for movement to happen. Pairs of nerve roots on each side branch off the spinal cord to control the organs and tissues of the body.
When one of the spinal bones is ill-positioned, nerve irritation called a “subluxation” can occur.
Two types of disturbance are a compressed lesion and a facilitative lesion.
Essentially, a compressed lesion is a pinched nerve. However, more common among humans is the facilitative lesion, which occurs when a nerve root is stretched, twisted or chafed.
A chiropractor’s job is to locate the areas of your spine where a nerve is irritated because a bone is stuck and not moving like it should. Then, a chiropractor will make an adjustment to allow your body to correct itself in an effort to reduce nerve irritation.
