9--What-is-Spinal-Stenosis-

Lumbar spinal stenosis is one of the most common reasons for spinal surgery among older people.

Spinal stenosis happens when the spinal canal is narrowed, either by mechanical problems or spinal abnormalities due to age. These can include infection, vertebral fractures, a spinal cord tumor or thickened ligaments, among other issues.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis include lower back pain triggered by walking or prolonged standing, limping, lack of feeling in the leg and muscle weakness and spasms. Stenosis can be degenerative and can be present for years before symptoms arise. Symptoms are sometimes triggered by a fall or accident.

The three main treatments for spinal stenosis include the conservative medical approach, the conservative chiropractic approach and surgery.

The conservative medical approach can involve bed rest, local heat and muscle relaxers, while the conservative chiropractic approach includes manipulation and exercise. These exercises help mobilize the nerves involved in the stenosis.

While stenosis is chronic and can’t be cured, your symptoms can be mitigated and your problem can be improved. Working with our doctors of chiropractic at Advantage Chiropractic Clinic in Auburn, you can reduce your symptoms and ultimately achieve an improved quality of life.
